Welcome to the Matthews Area Chamber! We organized to help retain businesses and residents we have and to encourage new businesses and residents. We wanted to preserve our historic past and help revitalize our main street.


In 2008, Susie Bruce Ripley, Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA), came to do a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis for Matthews which led the way to our being designated a Main Street Community by Lt. Governor Becky Skillman in 2009. Later, we received a planning grant for a Ratio Design document for our revitalization.


We utilize the Main Street four point plan of  organization, design, promotion and economic restructuring.


We are proud of the businesses we have on  Massachusetts Avenue including  Jennerjahn Machine which made $13 million in 2013, Matthews Feed and Grain which keeps expanding. Matthews Mercantile which rivals Nashville shops, along with Memory Lane Antiques. These shops attract ladies shopping for just the right thing from all over the state.


Blue Dutch Automobiles quickly clears its lot of automobiles and trucks every month. The trim and attractive Personal Touch Beauty Shop keeps many long time customers while across the street Johnson’s Amoco sells the best tasting tenderloins in the area. Concannon’s Bakery (Muncie) stocks Johnson’s with pastries everyday for local  customers.


The Cumberland Covered Bridge attracts 15,000 visitors every year as the Matthews Lions Club sets up its Bridge Festival the weekend after Labor Day, as it has for over 40 years, with the bridge restored and  placed on the National Register in 1999.


To assist in fund-raising for our Downtown Revitalization, Jay Buffington heads up a committee that produces an annual  Blue Grass Festival  the third Saturday in May at the bridge festival grounds which boasts 5 Blue Grass bands.


The baseball park is an attraction for Neighborhood Games every summer for youth and adults, often playing other teams.


The Matthews Marketplace Bazaar, the second weekend in November, promotes our own businesses and provides a venue for other local vendors.


Other projects we have worked on include our Baseball Cancer Benefit Games in 2011 & 2012 , our Wedding Expo in 2011 and our pursuit in 2009, 2010 to give back the town of Matthews a state road running through it by proposing the extension of SR5.
